Constructing the New Sanctuary

Exciting things continue to happen here at Family Worship Center! For the past couple of months, it's been full speed ahead on the construction project to get us into our new sanctuary. We've been using the lobby area of our new facility to conduct services, and though it's served us well temporarily, it's definitely cramped.

Almost every Saturday many of the men from the church as well as some of the women have been down at the building working fervently. These Saturday work days have been filled with lots of sweat and humor. Walls have been torn down, new walls put up, steps built, walls textured and painted, lights, electricity, carpet, etc, etc, etc. In short - a whole lot of work has been done in a short period of time. We are all appreciative to everyone who continues to sacrifice their time to work on this project.

Thursday night, we held our first Bible Study service in the new sanctuary although it's not 100% completed, it's getting close enough that everyone wanted to stretch out a little.

We're looking forward to the fully finished product.

Sunday School Picnic

This year's Sunday School Picnic and Worship Service in the Park was a fabulous success. Approximately 150 people from the church, their friends, family and other acquaintances swarmed into a local park for worship, food, fun, contests, and games. We were especially honored to have Pastor Exum's father and mother in attendance.

The set-up crew arrived bright and early to get all the tents, tables, and chairs ready for the coming events. Bill Mentser fired up the barbecue and before long the fragrance of tri-tip and chicken was wafting through the park.

After a short song service, Pastor Exum preached a message on Heaven to the congregation spread out under tents on folding chairs, lawn and camping chairs, blankets, or standing along the edges. Then it was time to eat the incredible spread of food.

When everyone had their fill, the kids ran off to enjoy the jump house, petting zoo, and pony rides. Soon after, games and competitions began. A highlight of each years' picnic is the watermelon eating contest. The kids were up first with girls' and boy's winners. Then, the ladies' dove in with vigor where Ruby won first place. The men always are up for the challenge to try to beat the past 2 year's running champion - Robert Exum. Dispite their nobel efforts, Robert once again took first place.

There were bag races and tug of war. They decided to do the "older" men versus the "younger" men. The younger men didn't hold any weight (literally) against the older men. But everyone was in good spirits and had a lot of fun.

Throughout the afternoon, everyone enjoyed snow cones and cotton candy - especially the kids which was appropriate since this event was specifically geared toward the Sunday School aged children in the community. But regardless of age, everyone had an equal amount of energy and fun.

A special thanks to our Pastor's Wife, Kim Exum, and her crew for all her had work to make this event a success. We're all looking forward to next year's!

Fourth of July: Parade, BBQ & Fireworks

What felt like the crack of dawn for some us, we were up early in anticipation of the long and exciting day ahead. We were excited to be representing Family Worship Center for the first time in American Canyon's annual 4th of July Parade. It seems like everyone from the town pours out to watch, so we knew our debut had to be just right.

The youth group and children from Sunday School arrived at 8am at the Exums' home to decorate bikes and the Brunos' truck in full patriotic regalia. You've never seen so much red white and blue in one place! The truck was covered in streamers, tassels, banners, flags, and anything else we could get our hands on that represented the proud colors of our country.

Not only did we deck out the truck and bikes, but we also decked ourselves out. Everyone proudly donned red white and blue hats, wigs and tee shirts embroidered with Family Worship Center's insignia. Even Tony Bruno got into the spirit of the holiday by wearing the "Uncle Sam" hat and beard. That made for fun pictures!

We waited patiently until the parade started at 10:30am. When it finally got underway, Larissa, Rosa, & Laura held the church banner at the front of our group while Noel & Gwyneth rode their fully decorated bicycles. On the sides, our youth group passed out candy to the people lining the streets while Tony & Charlie rode in the truck with the menagerie of Sunday School kids waving and holding their flags.

The whole group was inspired to see how much of our church family came out to cheer us on through our two mile walk. When we arrived at one corner, a whole slew of the church had turned out to help pass out water bottles to the parade participants, courtesy of FWC. They even made contact with the mayor and other officials in the community. Since it was so hot, everyone was very appreciative of this kind gesture. It's just one more way FWC is reaching out to help our surrounding area.

By the end, we were exhausted and hot, so we disbursed, some going to get some pizza and others to relax at home for a while before the next stage of FWC's Grand 4th of July party.

Around 4pm, people started to arrive at the church to help get ready for the BBQ and by 6pm we had a full tri-tip feast set out with all the delicious sides and desserts. And when everyone had their fill, friendly competition ensued with a volleyball game in the parking lot. They even brought out a mini bike and the kids, and even our Pastor, took rides around the lot.

At last! Evening started creeping in, reminding us that soon Fireworks would be ringing through the night, reminding us of our Freedom. We hurried to clean up and reserve prime seating at the Community park for the show.

All the church family gathered around with chairs and blankets in preparation of the fireworks show. And we were not disappointed. Everyone craned their necks to watch the magnificent fireworks display that seemed to be right above our heads with "oohhhs" and "ahhhs".

And thus ended another fabulous 4th of July, celebrating our country's birthday with church family and friends.

Church Camping Trip 2008 Recap

About 25 people from Family Worship Center ventured out to Bodega Dunes at Bodega Bay for the first annual church camping trip. God was looking down on us and blessed us by providing us with beautiful, warm and sunny days at the beach. The evenings were a bit chilly, but that made it perfect to sit around the campfire, eat s'mores, and in traditional camp spirit, sing songs and tell stories.

Larissa & Charlie managed to come across a Coast Garter Snake one day and after some debate about the name, landed on the name Maximus. While some of us, like Tyler, Nebil and Sis Audrey shied away from the creature, Larissa and Charlie seemed to enjoy their temporary pet snake quite a bit.

The snake wasn't the only wildlife with whose presence we were graced. Raccoons invaded a few ice chests, sneaking off with eggs and bacon. And the skunks. Well, they got a little too close for comfort. You would have thought everyone was stone statues as they waited for them to meander far enough to not get frightened and spray.

One morning, Bro Mike and Bro Matt went diving for abalone. That evening, we were provided a tasty feast with the fruit of their labor. While they were diving, Sis Exum and others channeled her inner-kid and built sand castles. And some of the youth group wasted the time away by playing games such as Balderdash and Monopoly.

We all kept entertained with the seals that had beached themselves on the sand. Charlie even had the great idea to try to pick up one that wasn't doing much moving. That didn't turn out so well when the seal picked up his head and growled at them. Other entertainment was provided by Nebil, who proceeded to sing and dance for everyone.

One of the highlights of the trip was the most magnificent sunset on Friday evening. As the streaks of orange painted the sky over the water, we were reminded of the Greatness of God and his creation.

It was a spectacular trip. Everyone had a great time building lasting relationships with one another and creating a bond of friendship. We look forward to next year's camping trip!

Advanced Bible Study Field Trip to the Dead Sea Scrolls

Fragments of the Dead Sea Scrolls were among the ancient artworks and objects featured in “Treasures from the Holy Land,” at the Legion of Honor in San Francisco. The Dead Sea Scrolls, one of the greatest archaeological discoveries of all time, were uncovered by Bedouin herders in 1947 and excavated by archaeologists in caves along the shores of the Dead Sea. Fragments of the scrolls were pieced together to form more than 800 documents, many of them Biblical manuscripts. In addition to featuring rotating examples of the Dead Sea Scroll fragments, the exhibit included artifacts from ancient Israel, spanning 5,000 years.

Pastor Exum took the Advanced Bible Study class on a field trip to view these amazing artifacts. The group enjoyed viewing all the ancient pieces as well as a trip to Fisherman's Wharf.
